Working Loughborough roofs week in, week out means we know the local stock inside out - the Victorian and Edwardian red-brick terraces off Ashby Road, Storer Road and Derby Road, the big interwar semis running out through Shelthorpe, Thorpe Acre and Hathern Road, and the older cottages on the Charnwood side that still carry Swithland slate laid in diminishing courses on oak pegs. That slate almost never fails; it is the pegs, the nails and the battens under it that give up after a century of holding the weight, which is why relaying a slate roof properly costs less over time than paying somebody to re-bed the same few slates every other winter. The post-war and 1960s estates are a different job again, whole streets reaching the end of the same concrete interlocking tile at once. And with the town sitting low on the Soar, wind-driven rain gets into tired ridge bedding, flashings and valley leadwork here long before a mark ever shows on a ceiling, so that is where we look first rather than just refitting the one tile you can see from the pavement.
